I'm back in my hometown Grimstad to do a week of teaching and spending time with my family.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Winter in picturesque Grimstad is freezing and quiet - quite the contrast from the buzzing and November-mild New York City in every sense you can imagine. I'm in the opinion that the people in Grimstad tend to hibernate during the winter - on the contradiction they are wide awake the whole summer season. Yet, I might be wrong: Grimstad is named "The City of Poets" - so maybe they are all at home writing their future master pieces. Both Henrik Ibsen and Knut Hamsun has lived and been inspired by the town - now the town gets inspired by them. Anyways, the streets are as good as empty - and it's under one month until Christmas. I've been sleepy myself the last days - the warmth from whooly blankets and the fire place makes me comfortable drowsy...

Grimstad in the early 1900's. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Nevertheless, next week it's finally time to wake up: Hello, Oslo! I haven't been there for almost five months - so it's going to be good to eventually go back home - to routines and my long lost social life.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Yesterday I thought about how I - too seldom - tend to take advantage of the cultural and creative offer in my hometown. Why not urge the urban impulses and inspiration where you live? How high is the city? How deep is your love?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We came in via the maintenance entrance.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">- Eh, Ladies! An elderly African American park-guard peaked out of his shed. A sly smile. - Have you ever been to Green-Wood before? No?? Pause. -You can get lost y'know - like many have before you. And y'aint wanna get lost in there. Pause. - Look what I've got! He handed us a map. So you're here now - that's a pond, that and that and that entrance is only open in the weekends, that's the chapel, the mausoleum and the crematory. Careful by the crematory - look what happend to me! He started laughing. -Enjoy the park and the peace, ladies!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The Green-Wood Cemetery opened in 1838 and was, at the time, the largest outdoor park in New York City. It's really beautiful: Winding paths, rolling hills, Victorian sculpture, manmade lakes and nature.

Rough start. We were out of coffee. Hanne surely wouldn't like that. On her birthday!! We dressed up in our smarest clothes and headed for Manhattan. Our first stop of the day?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Porto Rico Importing Co. in The Village - for a good, fresh cup of black coffee AND half a pound of medium roast Brazilian Espresso. Mmmm! So, Hanne would probably have chosen Starbucks - but she hasn't been to Porto Rico, has she?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">A vintage shop - or three - on the way, of course.
They all look alike - AND they all look ilke we do back home - I mean even the 'Party Swedes' are present. So, have we all been Hipsters all this time whitout realizing? Is the laid back Scandinavian comfort clothing the trendsetter for the hipsters in NYC - or did the hipsters first arrive in Williamsburg? Who's the copy cat and who is the trendsetter? A classic "hen or the egg"-theory - yet it's somewhat irrelevant. Don't get me wrong; many of them look great! <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Today we've spent the day in Park Slope, Brooklyn - an area that by word of mouth in the city - is known for it's number of strict mums and spoiled brats. We didn't see too many of them ( I don't know wether it's beacuse we're used to the enourmous stroller-parades at Grunerløkka in Oslo - hence are immune - or if they actually were hiding out somewhere today). Nevertheless we did find beautiful boutiques, cafes and a charming and laid back neighbourhood.
Having had the whole week off I'm quite surprised by how little preparations I actually have done. Still, the previous weeks has been very challenging - so my apathy might be excused and somewhat understandable, I guess.
Nevertheless - my friend and travel companion, Lene, figured that a bit of travelling would do me good after all. So while I've been at home with my family she's been in researching the concrete jungle of New York City and rented an apartment in Brooklyn. Departure next monday - staying for about three weeks.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Some of you might think that I am in Mexico - but just a few hours prior to my scheduled departure last tuesday one of my sisters called and told my not to go after all. Our dad was seriously ill and the doctors did not think that he would make it. Incidents like this just throw your world around - and all of a sudden six weeks in Mexico was the last thing I wished for. By noon I was at the hospital. He passed away three days later - peaceful and calm.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I will always appreciate that I got to be a part of the crazy and truly facinating world of my dad - a world that turned out to be my family and of course an endless line of good stories and laughs. He had a long and happy life that I imagine most people can only wish for. I certainly do. Reading about him in the newspapers, watching the news and all that is slightly surreal, though.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Blogging about this does feel too personal for me, so I will stop now - but as I've asked the lot of you to follow I felt that I owe you an explanation for the lack of posts.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I will continue blogging - when I am ready.Nillehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14161284557298490151noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956296892621042541.post-21599349235148401012010-10-16T19:27:00.001+02:002010-10-16T23:19:19.930+02:00Destination #3<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Three days and counting. The last days have been really busy in a not so good way - and therefore the recent lack of blog posts. The problem is - I've sort of waited to do things until the last minute - and on top of that a couple of unfortunate events have been messing my schedule up even more. Nevertheless - it always tends to work out in the end - this time I thank heavens for good friends and neighbours! What should I do without them, eh? I'm calmer now! :)
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The third stop on our trott around Mexico is going to be the vibrant, colourful and convivial city of Oaxaca (prenounced Wa-hah-kah). Quite the contrast from Norway in November I imagine. Oaxaca is known for their top-class museums, lovely architecture and its own flavorsome version of Mexican cuisine. Being above average interested in food - this should be a real treat! Did you know that "mole" means sauce? Well, Oaxaca is famous for their variety of moles!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In Oaxaca we'll be attending <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Oaxaca International Independent Film and Video Festival<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">. The festival is the newest member of the dynamic and energized cinematic community that has emerged within the area over the last decade. To be honest, I haven't had time to check out the program yet, but according to the festival website the festival is designed to be a competitive event, that aims to provide a platform for both the talents of seasoned filmmakers as well as emerging artists to showcase their work.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Wish you all a very happy weekend :))
